Skills Bootcamp: Mental Health Peer Supporter
Training Provider: Oaklands College

With a Level 5 qualification and a background that didn’t initially align with her ambition to work in mental health, Tanya found herself unsure of where to start. Unemployed but eager to contribute to a field she felt passionate about, she was introduced to the Skills Bootcamp in Mental Health Peer Supporter at Oaklands College through friends and family. The bootcamp, delivered in collaboration with Mind in Mid Herts, aimed to empower individuals like Tanya to develop the skills needed to support others and create positive change.

Path to the Bootcamp
Before starting the course, Tanya was no stranger to the world of mental health, having volunteered for several months with Mind in Mid Herts. This experience gave her exposure to working alongside those in recovery but left her feeling uncertain about transitioning to a formal role. Despite her relevant volunteer experience, she found herself hesitating to apply for roles in mental health, wondering if her skills were sufficient.

Through career coaching sessions as part of the bootcamp, Tanya received practical advice on how to showcase her volunteer experience and skills. With support in crafting her personal statement and understanding how to highlight her strengths, she began building the confidence she needed.

Skills Acquired
The Skills Bootcamp in Mental Health Peer Supporter provided Tanya with knowledge and tools specific to the mental health field, enabling her to bridge the gap between volunteer work and a professional career. Some of the areas covered included:

  • Understanding Mental Health Factors: Tanya gained an understanding of the complex factors that can impact individuals’ mental health, helping her approach support work with empathy and knowledge.

  • Peer Support Techniques: She learned practical methods to engage and empower individuals in recovery, vital for building trust.

  • Mental Health Diagnoses and Preparedness: Her new skills helped her prepare for common mental health conditions, giving her confidence in her interactions.

These skills, combined with her existing experience, made Tanya feel well-prepared for a role in mental health support.

Progression and Success
Upon completing the program, Tanya’s determination paid off when she secured a Senior Support Worker position at Mind in Mid Herts. This role allows her to apply her newly acquired skills while continuing to grow within the mental health field. Tanya reflected on the boost the bootcamp gave her: “What really benefitted me in the interview and application was not only attending the Peer Support Group course at Oaklands College but also my volunteering experience with Mind over the past few months.”

Tanya’s journey from volunteer to professional in mental health is an inspiring example of how Skills Bootcamps can help individuals overcome self-doubt and create meaningful career paths. Her experience encourages those unsure of their capabilities to pursue training and turn passion into a career, showing that it’s never too late to achieve new goals.
