Land Management & Arboriculture Skills Bootcamp
Skills Bootcamp: Land Management & Arboriculture
Training Provider: Oaklands College
The Land Management & Arboriculture Skills Bootcamp at Oaklands College is a unique opportunity for those passionate about nature, biodiversity, and conservation. Partnered with Maydencroft, a leading environmental consultancy, this bootcamp aimed to equip learners with hands-on skills for careers in the green industry.
Path to the Bootcamp
The five learners who joined the Land Management & Arboriculture Skills Bootcamp discovered it through social media marketing and support from Jobcentre Plus. For these individuals, the bootcamp marked a crucial step toward re-entering the workforce after varying periods of unemployment. With 80% of the group unemployed for over a year, they sought a way to contribute positively to the environment while gaining stability.
For many, this training was more than just a job opportunity; it was a chance to work in an area they truly valued. Their backgrounds varied, but all learners shared a dedication to conservation and a desire to learn skills that would help them enter the land management industry.
Skills Acquired
The bootcamp covered a comprehensive set of skills necessary for land management roles. These included:
-
Biosecurity and Ecology Awareness: Learners gained insight into biosecurity risks and the importance of protecting native ecosystems.
-
Tree Surveying and Plant Care: Key skills like tree surveying and aftercare for newly planted trees were introduced, crucial for arboriculture roles.
-
Employability and Water Safe Working: Training emphasised safety and employability, making learners work-ready.
-
Invasive Non-Native Species Control and OPM Awareness: Essential knowledge for tackling ecological challenges and protecting the environment.
Additionally, the program provided work experience, where learners had hands-on training with supervised use of tools and machinery. These skills prepared the learners to work confidently on conservation projects.
Progression and Success
Following the bootcamp, four of the learners completed a work experience placement with Maydencroft, shadowing mentors and applying their skills. Of these learners, two – Bahram and Charlie – excelled during their placements, leading to permanent employment offers with Maydencroft. This success story exemplifies how the bootcamp provides pathways into the industry by allowing learners to demonstrate their skills in a practical setting.
The small class size allowed for individualised learning and a supportive environment where each learner could ask questions and gain confidence. “The course is good, we learned many interesting subjects,” one learner shared. Another noted that the small group setting was ideal for learning in-depth about wildlife and plants, expressing appreciation for the curriculum’s breadth.
Inspiring Others
The success of these learners highlights the impact of Skills Bootcamps in bridging the gap between passion and employability. The combination of skill development, hands-on experience, and direct employer engagement offers a roadmap for others considering a career in land management or arboriculture. Their story is a testament to how environmental passion can be transformed into meaningful, lasting careers in an industry that truly makes a difference.
